What’s Loopin’: BAKER VIDEO WITH, ANDREW ZACH and ROWAN

I know I love a skate video when it makes me want to write, and here I am, writing. 3 days ago, Baker made an Instagram post announcing that they had a new video dropping at midnight, and the countdown was on.

I was immediately looking forward to this video, and went to bed with the plan of watching the video as soon as I was up. I love that I didn’t know they were working on a video, it was teased for months, all of a sudden I just had to wait one day and then enjoy it. Although, a good build up and tease can be great, as well.

From the skating, to the music, and of course the B-Roll/Hijinx, this is a great watch. If you somehow missed it, scope it below, then enjoy the loops!

It kicked off with non other than The Boss. Reynolds is someone that I think just about everyone enjoys to watch. Although he’s often recognized for jumping, rightfully so, I was looking forward to some cool manuals, and well pieced together lines out of him, and got just that.

Behind The Loops: Vincent Jugnet

🌀: What’s up Vincent! What’re you up to right now, just kicking it? I know it’s night time out in Lyon…

Yeah I’m chilling. It’s Winter time here, so there’s not that much skating, unfortunately. It’s super cold. No skating, no filming, but I have a bunch of work. What about you?

🌀: Ahh, yeah, I can imagine that Winters are tough out there. I’m good, dealing with this annoying time change, it gets dark at 5pm, so that makes it hard to skate. But, it’s not freezing cold, so I can’t complain.

Yeah, yeah. I’ve got the same problem (laughs)

🌀: So what role did you play in the new Hélas “Paris” edit? I know you mentioned to me you had filmed some second angles.

Yes, it’s been about 2 years now since the “Fellas” video, and I’ve been working as the sales manager for Hélas. I was there for about half of this Paris trip, getting double angles with the filmer we got for that trip (Augustin Giovannoni). It was good to be out with the boys, after 2 years of Covid and shit, it was the first trip we’ve made happen.

What’s Loopin’ – 9/15/21

There has been no shortage of amazing skateboarding recently. From video parts, to montages, and incredible Instagram clips from the recent Copenhagen Open, it’s been non stop. Here are some of our recent favorite videos, that we recommend you give a watch, or re-watch –

Thunder’s most recent “Know Future” installment is with Alec Spinsoi, and it does not disappoint. I loved the balance of classic gnarliness, like the huge double set Heelflip, and the Bigspin down the set into the bank (See below, Slide 2), and the more creative, unconventional tricks, like the Fakie Flip grind down the curb (See below, slide one), and the Smith Pop over into the grass.

The Fakie Flip grind in an instant eye catcher. He popped that Fakie Flip and stomped it down with authority, just to hold a smooth Fakie 50 down the curb and out. That trick seems like it would lead to endless slams by simply not locking in correctly, but, Alec handled it. The Bigspin down the set and into the bank is simply put, beautiful. That spot is so cool looking with the building in the back, and is not a type of spot you see all too often. It was done perfectly, and the slo mo as Alec lands onto that quick bank made me enjoy it even more. Great part all around!

What’s Loopin’: Diego Nájera

Just a couple weeks ago, Diego Nájera had a new colorway drop for Adidas. Thankfully, the lead up to this release included amazing new footage, and that’s what I’m here to dive into.

Diego is someone who looks naturally talented on a skateboard. Not that he doesn’t work hard, but he looks like he belongs on a skateboard. His board control and pop are incredible, it’s what others (myself included) dream of having. For years now, I have been a fan of his, when he has footage drop I want to watch it over and over, and study how he can make something so unbelievable, look so normal.

This is a great example of his control. A perfectly flicked and stomped Fakie Flip, followed by a smooth Switch Tre. He didn’t even lift his head, he knew when to pop. Look at the rollaway, it looks like he’s just cruising around and could keep this line going, with ease.

Behind The Part – Tanner Lawler “Welp”

In December 2016, I showed up to the West LA Courthouse with Daniel Policelli for a session. There were only two other people there that day, one person skating, and one filming. The skater was Tanner, I had recognized him from seeing him around at contests in the past, and come to find out, he recognized me as well. Since it was such a small crew that day, I figured I’d say what’s up. I chatted with Tanner, and the filmer, Bryan Betz, for a few minutes, and went on with my session. A few months later, Tanner posted that he was in San Diego skating, so I hit him up, and ended up showing his crew some spots.

Fast forward four and a half years, and here we are. Tanner and I have traveled together to places like San Francisco and Toronto, we skate as often as possible, and nerd out on just about every skate video that drops. Working on a project with such a close friend makes it even more special. We had a long conversation about why his part is titled “Welp”, how he finds spots on Google Maps, escaping from the cops, his obsession with Takis, and more. Enjoy, oh, and give “Welp” a rewatch while you’re at it.

🌀: How are you feeling now that your part has dropped? I know it’s been a process to film, edit, and get it released, but it’s finally out there!

It feels really good. Originally we were working on a different project, which didn’t end up working out, but obviously we still had the footage and wanted to put out a part. This seemed like the easiest way to put it out, with you. One thing that the footage was going to go towards was a Thunder part, but with Covid that got pushed back a little bit, so we were waiting trying to figure out what to do with the footage, and Nate (Thunder TM) said to just put this part out, then start working on the Thunder part, so we aren’t sitting on this footage for too long.

Raffle on The Nine Club Experience

Whether it’s laughing at Chris’ jokes, or learning a piece of history from Roger, I always enjoy The Nine Club Experience. Chris and the crew truly care about skateboarding, they constantly support others, give back to communities, and help those in need, and I love that.
