In December 2016, I showed up to the West LA Courthouse with Daniel Policelli for a session. There were only two other people there that day, one person skating, and one filming. The skater was Tanner, I had recognized him from seeing him around at contests in the past, and come to find out, he recognized me as well. Since it was such a small crew that day, I figured I’d say what’s up. I chatted with Tanner, and the filmer, Bryan Betz, for a few minutes, and went on with my session. A few months later, Tanner posted that he was in San Diego skating, so I hit him up, and ended up showing his crew some spots.

Fast forward four and a half years, and here we are. Tanner and I have traveled together to places like San Francisco and Toronto, we skate as often as possible, and nerd out on just about every skate video that drops. Working on a project with such a close friend makes it even more special. We had a long conversation about why his part is titled “Welp”, how he finds spots on Google Maps, escaping from the cops, his obsession with Takis, and more. Enjoy, oh, and give “Welp” a rewatch while you’re at it.

🌀: How are you feeling now that your part has dropped? I know it’s been a process to film, edit, and get it released, but it’s finally out there!

It feels really good. Originally we were working on a different project, which didn’t end up working out, but obviously we still had the footage and wanted to put out a part. This seemed like the easiest way to put it out, with you. One thing that the footage was going to go towards was a Thunder part, but with Covid that got pushed back a little bit, so we were waiting trying to figure out what to do with the footage, and Nate (Thunder TM) said to just put this part out, then start working on the Thunder part, so we aren’t sitting on this footage for too long.

🌀: Yeah, that makes sense. So after your Transworld Checkout part dropped, did you go straight into filming for this, you just weren’t exactly sure what the footage would be used for?

When did we go to Canada?

🌀: We went June 2019, so right after your Transworld Check Out part dropped.

When we finished up the Check Out part, we didn’t stop filming, there was no point to take a break just cause I dropped something. It was just onto the next. I don’t want people thinking that we’re not filming, it’s just not the easiest to get footage out all the time.

🌀: Yeah, for sure. So was the Canada footage feeling too old to use in this part?

We for sure used some clips from before we went to Canada, so it’s not that it was too old. When we first started editing the part it was directed towards Thunder, and we were hoping to use footage from mainly one filmer. So if we used the footage from Canada, it would’ve been an extra filmer, so we didn’t have it in the edit.

🌀: Gotcha.

The Canada stuff will come out, just not yet.

🌀: So let me hear the backstory to the title of your part, why’s it called “Welp”?

My favorite movie is Dumb and Dumber. There’s a line in the movie he says “Welp, see ya later” and I’ve just always said that quote. And we had so much trouble getting this part out we thought it seemed fitting like “Welp, this is what we got. It’s finally done” haha. You actually reminded me that we thought of that name a while back. And coming up with something for this part, you suggested it. 

🌀: Haha that’s pretty sick that it came from Dumb and Dumber. Yeah, I remember you mentioning that you wanted to use “Welp” as a title a while back, so when you were figuring out a title for this part I brought it up.

Yeah, thanks for reminding me.

🌀: Glad I remembered. With so many video parts dropping these days, I think any little thing to make your part stand out is a great idea. In your case, it’s the animations, you had a friend of yours draw those, right?

Yeah I like how WKND does all the drawings and animations for their parts. My friend Drake who I’ve known since we were in 6th grade does cool graphic design work. I mentioned to him about making a title and stuff. He was down. Came out super dope. He did the credits and all that too. 

🌀: That’s rad. WKND does a great job with that, but it’s cool how your friend Drake’s animations really have his style in them, it didn’t necessarily remind me of WKND, it’s his own way of doing it. It’s always cool to include an old friend in a project like this too. 

Yeah I was hyped that he did it too. If he’s down I’ll have him do more for upcoming stuff. Cool to have your friends involved for sure. 

🌀: That’s enough about the title and art, let’s dive into the skating. I’m just trying to get this straight, you were once in Battle at the Berrics, but now you’re dropping parts without any flat ground tricks in them?

Hahaha dude, I straight up went the whole part not thinking about flatground. Once I realized it I was so bummed. But whatever. I had been watching a bunch of Suciu footage and have just been hyped on quick lines. We also didn’t really skate any spots that had long gaps between each ledge where there would be space for flatground. So It wasn’t like I was staying away from flatground. I just didn’t skate anything where I needed to. My flat ground tricks are still there I swear haha. Just didn’t really need any for the spots we were skating. Next part we’ll have to make up for the lack of it.  

🌀: Haha, you’ll make up for it for sure. Is it Suciu’s “Verso” part you’ve been watching, or some older parts of his?

I’ve watched Verso a bunch. But I’ve been watching older stuff lately. Just stuff I haven’t watched since I was little or even stuff I never got around to watching. It’s cool to just play entire videos before I go to bed. I watched that video of AVE talking about his green metal ledge, and they showed all the old footage, so I watched the DC video and Mind Field. Last night I watched Yeah Right, then Pretty Sweet played after. Of course whatever new stuff drops I’ll watch that too. But videos I consistently watch are like Tim Tim’s “A Time To Shine” part, almost all of Shane’s footage, Mark’s “Cross Continental” part. Stuff like that gets me hyped when I’m about to go skate. 

🌀: I can see the inspiration from those dudes in your skating. Like you said, you were hyped to do quick lines because of watching Suciu’s footage. It’s cool how the skateboarders you’re hyped on can influence how you actually skate. 

Yeah, I don’t think I’d say I skate like them, but I wish to. And the inspo is there for sure haha. As insane as they are, there’s some relatability to them for me when I watch. That’s what I like to watch before I go skating, skating that can give me ideas. Then there’s people like Carlos, Ishod, Miles. Who I love watching all their parts. Ishod is one of my favorite skaters. I’m comfortable saying he’s the best on earth, but the stuff he skates isn’t what I skate so I can’t watch that and be like “yo I can….” like nah haha. I’m obviously lower impact skating. No rails. No big gaps. So I really enjoy skating I can relate to in a way. Tricks I understand what it would take to do them. That’s where the inspiration comes from. At least when I say I want to watch a video before I go skate. Stuff that can get me thinking of tricks and lines. 

🌀: 100%. Ishod is the GOAT. I get what you’re saying, it’s fun to watch skating that can give you ideas, and people that skate similar spots to you will do that. 

It’s motivating for me. Seeing tricks that make me want to try them, or just go skate in a similar way. Another dude I really like watching is Flo Mirtain. Ledge dude. Cool manual tricks. Stuff like that gets me hyped. 

🌀: Definitely. I remember the day Verso dropped we went and skated Cherry, and you were messing with Front Board Front 270 on the flat bar, cause Suciu did one in the part. It’s cool because let’s say you learned that trick, then you can find your own way to do it, a different type of spot, or maybe it makes you think of a different trick you want to learn. 

Oh yeah before we skated we watched it in the car. Maybe two times. That front board 270 was more like a trick I saw and wanted to see if I could do one. Idk if I could take that to the streets but definitely wanted to try one because of him. 

🌀: Haha yeah, we had a premiere in your car. That trick is a dope one, anything where you gotta spin against your shoulders looks cool.

Yeah I’m a fan of starting one way and going out the opposite with your shoulders

🌀: Back to working on this part. So I know using Google Maps to find spots is pretty common these days, but I swear you found that flat bar spot that you skated with barely any context clues.

Yeah, when you sent that clip of Torey Pudwill skating it, I clicked on the filmers Instagram and went through his story, and they skated another spot that had a geotag that said what city it was. I saw there were water towers in the background, so I looked for water towers in that city, and ended up finding it. It was a water department part of a school. I’d rather work to find the spot then bother them and ask for the pin to the spot.

🌀: It’s kind of rewarding too, you get stoked when you find the spot.

Yeah, you don’t wanna be the guy that’s like “Yo, where’s this at?” That is the worst.

🌀: Haha, it’s the worst when someone doesn’t even mention the trick or anything. They just ask where the spot is.

If you’re homies and you’re like “Yo is this spot good?” That’s one thing. But, I wasn’t going to ask Torey Pudwill where that spot was. I was better off never skating it, or finding it myself. It wasn’t that hard to find.

🌀: I think we both knew that Back Smith would be the move, so you found it on Google Maps, and went that weekend to get it. But cops pulled up on the session right?

They did. The flat bar was so rusted, we waxed it for like five minutes straight. The bump would throw me kind of weird, so I would lock in funny or slip into a Back Lip, but it ended up working randomly. Then Richie was like “Hey, let’s get some B-Roll of you rolling up”, we got 2 B-Roll shots, then tried one more where Richie’s back was to the fence, and I saw a couple trucks pulling up. I was like “Yo Richie, we should dip”. The dudes that pulled up got out and immediately started filming us. The spot didn’t feel sketchy to be at or anything. The fence was like chest high, and it was a weekend. But obviously when people don’t say anything and they start taking pictures of you, it’s time to dip. Richie tried talking to them kinda just saying “Hey we’re leaving” just to let them know we’re cool, we’re not gonna stress them out. Richie just had to put his camera away, so the rest of us hopped and went to the car. There’s a wall in the parking lot so I wanted to back out of my parking space, that way I would be ready to go when Richie got to the car. As I’m waiting I see a cop down the street driving towards us. But I’m like “No way he got here that quick from the dude calling”. And boom, cop starts to turn in all slow. I was like “BT get Richie, cops are here”. BT got out of the car like “Richie hurry up!” And Richie jumped in super fast. I started driving off before he got the door closed. I turned out of the parking lot, then turned at the next light. I started kinda driving zig zags in case the cop saw us leave and tried to follow us. He could have turned his lights and sirens on, and pulled me over quick, but we got away. It’s kind of annoying when people just go straight to calling the cops. We weren’t rude. We left as soon as they got there. But whatever. Got no business ever going back now haha.

🌀: That’s crazy. I’m surprised the cop didn’t just hit his siren right when he saw your car leaving the lot.

He for sure could see me driving. That’s why I made a bunch of turns in the neighborhood, because he could’ve driven to the side of the parking lot I was on and followed us.

🌀: That’s a wild story, good thing you guys escaped though. 

Luckily we got the trick. It was kind of stupid, it didn’t seem like a place we would get kicked out of, especially on a weekend.

🌀: Got your trick and got out. 

Yeah.

🌀: Whenever we’re out skating I feel like food is a hot topic. What’s your ideal meal in between spots? 

My girlfriend works at a juice bar, so usually before we go skating I get an Acai bowl, then I pick everyone up. I’m not the biggest breakfast guy, so an Acai bowl is the closest I’ll get to eating before I skate. Almost everyone we skate with is down to go eat after we’ve skated a spot, but sometimes I don’t get hungry. I can skate the whole day, even if I don’t have an Acai bowl, if I start skating I won’t get hungry until it gets dark probably. So a lot of the time everyone is bugging like “Yo, we need to eat”, so I’m like “Fine, let’s go eat”. We usually just look up whatever fast food is around the area, It’s usually Chick-Fil-A.

🌀: Yeah that sounds about right. Chick-Fil-A is popping in skateboarding. I just watched that Jamie Foy video and he was hyping it up haha.

Yeah, and at Ish’s pro party they served Chick-Fil-A.

🌀: Yeah. Fast food does the job, that makes sense.

I know you’re not one for fast food unless you plan it out, you got your snacks.

🌀: I’m not down for all fast food places, but I’ll eat Chick-Fil-A. What if you stop by the gas station, what’re you grabbing?

I always have my hydroflask on me, so I don’t need a drink. I don’t know, I don’t really eat snacks while we’re out skating.

🌀: You’re not going to get the purple bag?

Not during the day! I don’t eat Takis during the day, that’s crazy. Look. If you want to ask me about Takis, ask me about Takis, but I am not grabbing those during the middle of a session.

🌀: So when’s prime time for the Takis?

So after I’m done skating, I go home and if I’m going to play video games or watch a movie, I can’t do any of that without some chips. I have a really bad snack problem, I can’t just be sitting there. It’s the same if I go to the movies, I need popcorn and a slurpee. So when I’m at home I’m obviously going to grab a big bag of Takis, and I’m going to eat the whole bag if they aren’t too spicy. They are so good.

🌀: Ok ok. So when does the pickle come into the equation? I know you eat those straight out of the jar…

So, pickles are a late night snack. It’s if I’m hungry but not going to make food. I’ll go downstairs, moms probably got a new jar of pickles for me in the fridge. Take a little sip of the pickle juice you know, it’s good for you, good for your… I don’t know what they’re good for, cramps? Eat a pickle or two, pickles are fire.

🌀: So do you get pickles on your Chick-Fil-A sandwich then?

Hell no. My pickles need to be cold, and they better not be sliced. I don’t want a pickle that is hot, that’s dirty. 

🌀: That’s fair, I mean I ain’t going to eat a pickle or Takis no matter what temperature or time of day.

You said next time you’re at my house you’ll eat a pickle!

🌀: I’ll try one, chances are it’ll be one and done, but I’ll try it. Anyway, let’s break down a few tricks. Front Blunt to Switch Manual, I remember being in class and you sending me the clip haha. It caught me by surprise. How did that come about, have you seen people skate that spot?

Yeah, that spot is in Long Beach. One of my homies, Aaron, skated it. Bryan had shown it to me. It’s just a little wall, so if you drive by you’d never think it’s a spot, and there’s always cars parked there. I had mentioned to Richie that we should skate it, you could do something to manny since you land on a sidewalk. One day there were no cars in the way so we checked it out. It’s just a wall that’s like flat bar height, so Front Blunt to Switch Manny was an idea I had.

🌀: The way Richie filmed it I was just expecting a trick out of Front Blunt, but then he followed you down into Switch Manny, it caught me off guard, I like it.

I don’t know if anyone has skated it to manual, I’m not going to say no one has, but I didn’t see someone skate it that way and go there to do it. I just like ledge to manuals. It wasn’t that easy to drop to manual, but it worked out.

🌀: Yeah, that’s not the lowest ledge to come off of to manual.

Yeah, it’s not high, but dropping from my tail to my nose was weird. It was a lot of Front Blunts over and over again.

🌀: So after you filmed that we were brainstorming some photos to go along with your part, and we went back for Eduardo to shoot it. Do you like planned missions like that, or would you prefer to just go skate and see what happens?

I like to have a plan the night before. I don’t have the best luck waking up and texting everyone like “Yo, where are we going to skate?” If we have one spot we want to go to, I try to get a bunch of spots in that area in case we get kicked out of the first spot, I don’t like to be at a spot trying to find another spot to go to. It is fun to roll with someone else that has a plan and just flow with whatever is going on, but usually I’m the one driving, so we plan it with whoever is filming, or that day with Ed shooting the photo.

🌀: Yeah, it has to be like that at times. I see both sides of it, of course if you spontaneously end up at a spot and get a trick it feels great, but it’s cool to picture a trick in your head and handle it.

When I have something planned and it works out, it’s the best feeling.  I would rather have spots picked out and have trick ideas then drive around and not know where to go. Unless someone else has a trick they want to try somewhere, there’s no pressure on you and it’s fun to go. But, I do like to have some trick ideas, and multiple spots picked out in an area.

🌀: Being in the LA area with all the traffic plays a role in it too, it doesn’t make sense to go to a spot without knowing any other spots in that area.

Yeah.

🌀But back to getting that photo. That was a fun session, it was cool to see that idea come to life. But for some reason Long Beach has purple recycle cans, what’s the deal with that?

That’s the color of recycle bins, they’re purple.

🌀: Have you seen the color of the recycle logo? It’s green…

Don’t tell me your recycle cans are blue…

🌀: We’re not talking about mine, we’re talking about the fact that the recycle logo is either green or blue, it ain’t purple. 

Look, I’m not a part of the board for the city of Long Beach.

🌀: Just get your city under control. You’re trying your trick and all I’m seeing is purple recycle cans. 

So the photo…

🌀: Yeah, I love how it turned out. Jake Darwen had shot a couple photos of Tom Karangelov where there’s 2 frames of him. I really like how it looks, and I knew that Eduardo would be the man for the job.

I don’t skate the most photogenic spots, no crazy rails or giant gaps, so the photo came out cool for what the spot is.

🌀: Speaking of spots you skate, I know Jkwon isn’t your favorite, but we met up there one morning at 6:30am for you to try a line. How was it getting the day going so early to get a clip?

Austin (Heilman) was talking to me the night before and he said they were going early, because this was during the time where Jkwon had security, so you could only skate it until 10am. I had never filmed that trick (Fakie Flip Tailslide FS Flip). Someone had bondo’d the chunks in the ledges the night before and it was still kind of soft, so I was just figuring out what trick to start the line out with. I don’t know if the bondo hardened, or we just waxed it, but it ended up working out for the first trick, and the second trick was chillin once we started trying to film it.

🌀: Yeah, you did the line a few times actually.

I had it in my head how I wanted to do it, and the first one or two I did weren’t the best. I’m not the biggest fan of Jkwon, but I like how the line turned out.

🌀: What is it that you don’t like about Jkwon?

It just becomes a zoo when you’re trying to skate there, I don’t know if I like there being 100 dudes in the background of most footage there. That’s one thing that’s in my head about the single trick we filmed there.

🌀: It does get hectic. Oh yeah, the line is followed up by your single trick.

Yeah, so when we went to film the line it was like get there and get your clip. There weren’t a bunch of people there because you’d have to go there early in the day, and not everyone cared to get up early and skate there, so I think it looked better. The day that we filmed the single trick was when there was no more security, so it had become a skatepark, there were just people all over. It just doesn’t look as cool as I think a plaza would, in my head. So, I wasn’t the most hyped on the clip, but I do like how it’s kind of connected to the line.

🌀: It is crazy how much Jkwon has changed, it really does feel like a skatepark now. We’ve seen little kids there with helmets and pads on, and I’m not hating on those kids, but you wouldn’t see that at most plazas. 

I think when it became a spot that could be skated all day long on Sundays, it just got too hectic. You don’t have to wake up at 6am and drive there to get a session before you’re kicked out anymore. It’s still a cool spot, but it’s not the same. The ledges are way more beat. I’m not even sure if they get fixed anymore. Like how someone would have to fill the chunks with bondo to skate them the next morning. Shout out to the dudes who put in work back then. At any time on a Sunday if you drive by now, there’s at least 100 dudes skating. It’s crazy.

🌀For sure. The thing I still like about it is the tile ground, plazas with tile ground just look cool.

The ground is really good, the ledges are fun to skate, but when you throw down there’s people going on the other side, and it just doesn’t feel as fun to skate there.

🌀Let’s keep diving into some tricks. So you Back Heel’d a gap, and our boy JP Souza was on the sesh making bets right?

JP needs hype when he’s a little nervous, to get him to commit. Taylor (McClung) and Carlos (Ribeiro) were there, and JP was having a hard time committing to his trick, so Carlos was saying “Hey, if I stick Switch Flip, you got my back”, and JP was like “Yep, 100%, I got your back.” but he was still having a hard time doing his trick. Carlos threw $100 on it, and Taylor said he had $50 on it, and I think Shane (Darnell) said he had $50 on it too, so $200. Carlos landed Switch Flip, Taylor got his back with Switch Flip, so JP went, but kicked out still. I think Carlos and Taylor Switch Flipped it at least 20 times back to back, just to get JP to get his trick, but sometimes when you’re too far gone in your head, it’s just hard to try your trick.

🌀: If you kick out a certain amount of times it becomes your body’s reaction to kick out. You just can’t do it. 

Carlos had to leave, and Taylor probably did 6 tricks down the gap, just skating it. He landed Tre Flip and I landed Back Heel right after him, and JP tried to get our back, but I don’t think he got it that day.

🌀: Did you feel added pressure on your trick because of the bets? I know it was between JP, Carlos and Trevor, but still.

Maybe I would’ve if I was going before JP, but they would all go, talk about their bets, then I would try my trick, so I didn’t feel any pressure. It was fun.

🌀: JP is so fun to skate with, it’s so funny to watch him force himself to try a trick. 

JP getting mad is the funniest thing to watch. Not that he’s mad, but just him knowing he can do a trick, and the jokes he makes. 

🌀: It’s also the best when he gets his tricks. Like when I filmed him 50-50 that rail, his reaction was so genuine.

Threw his arms in the air, so funny. JP is the best.

🌀: He is. Let’s talk about the Big Spin Back Tail. You had to Rub Brick metal? That might be NBD.

I met Richie in San Pedro, he got there before I did, so he started lurking around and found that spot. We got there, and it’s for sure never ever been skated, if we find footage of someone skating it it’s probably from like 20 years ago. The block we skated had coping, but it was this super gnarly, rusted, coping. Richie was like “I got a Rub Brick. We can get this rust off and it will go” He Rub Bricked it, we waxed it, and got it going. I tried it for like two hours, and it just wouldn’t slide, and even the rollaway is the worst asphalt. But I wasn’t even looking at the roll away, I couldn’t even slide. We left, and I forgot about it for like a year. Trevor and Richie were skating in San Pedro one day, and Richie said we could go check out this spot again. We went back, I tried it for a while again, maybe like an hour, and randomly I slid one and rolled away through the worst ground. I was so hyped on that. Snapped my board and we left.

🌀: I was just going to ask about your board. In the credits you’re walking with a broken board, and I know you aren’t one to really focus a board. Was that just out of relief?

I was like “Dude, we’re done. We’re leaving.” I didn’t need that board anymore, after how much crap I put it through. That spot really sucked.

🌀: It looks rugged. So Front Tail FS Flip up the curb hubba. I know the WKND dudes had been skating that spot, we found it and went. You got your trick, then asked me to film you Nollie Krook down it for your story, and then my Meniscus tore…

That is true…

🌀: Just for your story, not even a hard post. 

Dude I know, and I think it was the first one I made to the bottom.  I just happened to roll towards you, you were squatted down, and your knee just full on popped, we have the clip.

🌀: When I stood up I remember saying “Ow!” without even thinking it, it just came out. When you heard me say that, were you confused?

No, because when you stood up you kind of hopped, like you couldn’t put weight on your knee. I felt like the worst person ever. We had to wheel you out, get you under the gate, roll you to the car.

🌀: Hahaha, I’m just giving you a hard time, my knee was already bunk. But for real, if we had to hop the fence I don’t know what we would’ve done.

We would’ve figured it out, we would take care of you. But now your knee is all good, and I’m so happy it is.

🌀: Thank you. That was just a crazy story from working on this part, so I had to mention it. The last two tricks in the part are at USC, what is it that you enjoy so much about those ledges?

I think footage there looks pretty cool, it’s not a plaza, but people skate it like one. They’re good ledges, there’s no chunks, they slide and grind good. They’re rounded so there’s a lot more tricks you can do there, so I just think it’s a fun spot.

🌀: I love how there’s tricks that go down there that don’t go down at any other spot, because it’s hard to find a rounded ledge as good as that one. You filmed your ender, and then ended up going back to get that line to use right before it, right?

I had been wanting that line to go with that last trick. So after we got that, it kind of sealed the part for me, that was the last thing that I really wanted.

🌀: There’s endless opportunities for tricks there. It does have a plaza feeling in a way, you usually don’t get kicked out, and there’s always people skating there.

You can go there and just skate, it’s one of those spots. It looks good, and everyones cool there.

🌀: I’m a fan of when someone kills a spot, most notably Bobby Worrest with Pulaski in probably every part he’s had. Even with that Rowan Davis “Civic Central” part, it’s dope to see. Keep filming tricks at USC, it’s fun to watch.

I really like when people get a bunch of tricks at one spot. We didn’t get a lot at USC, but I would be down to film a bunch there if I could.

🌀: So I know Richie was the main filmer you worked on with this part, what is that dynamic like? From being on the sessions, I always trip out on Richie being a filmer cause he’s so good at skating.

Richie is the best skater. He’s a busy dude, he has two jobs, both pretty much full time. So when we first started filming he was down all the time, almost every weekend we would get out, if not even on the weekdays. We even got something the first week of quarantine, we were kind of nervous to be out. We did that roll on Back Tail in Downtown. At some point his job got even busier, so it was hard to skate with him for a while, and he films other dudes. We still film today, and he made time to edit this part. Richie is the best.

🌀: Did you play a role in choosing the songs?

I picked the Cam’ron song. My friends and I were just playing his songs, and I thought that song was a mellow enough speed for my skating, nothing too fast or too slow. Richie found the second song, he thought it would go well with the last tricks.

🌀: I feel like switching the song towards the end like highlighted the tricks well, so they didn’t go by too quick. 

Yeah, kind of like an intense beat. It slowed things down. 

🌀: I like how edited that. So what’s next now that this is wrapped up?

We’ve just been filming for a Thunder part. I’ve gotten a couple clips for it so far, and those aren’t usually super long parts, so that should be out pretty soon.

🌀: I like that. Go back to back. We were just in SF and you stacked a couple things. I mean, there was a minor issue with camera settings…

Yeah we’ll see how they look. Sometimes you gotta make do with what you got. We didn’t have a filmer on that trip.

I like how you filmed them and how I did the tricks, so they might be in the Thunder part.
