With a couple amazing video projects releasing over this past week, it only felt right to let out my thoughts out. When something releases and I’m stoked on it, I immediately text my friends, start talking about my favorite clips, and become obsessed. It turns into something I can’t stop thinking about, and wanting to talk about. I love that feeling. It’s a feeling that I crave when I don’t have, and I try to cherish when I do.
Well, let’s dive into what gave me that feeling this week. First off, an amazing video project out of Boston by Tim Savage, simply titled Brian, Brandon & Will. On Thursday my Instagram feed was full of clips from this video, and that’s all the convincing I needed, I knew I had to watch it. To set the stage, I had just wrapped up working for the day and was about to cook dinner, but decided I’d spare 12 minutes to watch this video. That 12 turned into a bit more, as once the video ended I couldn’t stop thinking about certain tricks I wanted to loop, and how refreshing of a watch it was.
The video kicks off with an intro that had me hooked. It had emotion to it. I wasn’t concerned about anything else in that moment, my attention was centered. In a day-and-age where names in skate videos isn’t a guarantee, I really liked the way Tim introduced each skater, and immediately got into the action. The behind the scenes look at Brandon Westgate’s Kickflip Nose Manny was a standout for me. That interaction was so genuine, and was an amazing way to transition into that second song.
To me, the most refreshing thing about this video was the spots that were skated, and how it was put together. Of course there’s some spots in here that have been in other videos, but there was a plethora of spots that I wasn’t familiar with. It brought an extra level of excitement, specifically with Westgate’s line at 8:27. As I watched this line, I noticed the red leaves in the back, and how that’s not something you’d see in LA footage, and how much I liked it. There will be many more loops to come from this one, hats off to you Tim, amazing video!
Next up, Lucas Puig and the beach curbs. I started my Saturday with this, and was then so stoked to go skating. Lucas filled this 90 second window with tricks that I doubt most people have ever thought of, and did them each to a T. As someone who gets endless joy out of skating curbs, seeing so many people hyped on Lucas’ curb clips was amazing, I’d recommend scrolling through the comment section, it got me stoked. A personal fav was the Crook 180 to Switch Crook. It was basically a no brainer to loop that one in celebration of his footage being released.
Also, I’m a fan of the simplicity of this video. An animation, then iPhone clips, that’s it. It felt relatable, and made me want to go do the same with my friends. After years of progressing ledge skating, it is so cool to see Lucas pushing the bar of what combos are possible on curbs. His creative approach combined with board control leads to gold, while looking cool along the way. It might sound obvious that great skating is a perfect way to launch a new product, but, I think this is a solid example, just Lucas doing what he does. To add to how impressive this footage is, Lucas also sprinkled clips on the Gram while he was working on this (which is mixed together here). It’s cool to go back and see what tricks he posted at that time, compared to what he saved for his shoe release edit, and the correspondence between the clips.
I’ve already watched this part a handful of times, and I’ll continue to do so. Cheers to everyone involved in Tim Savage’s Brian, Brandon & Will, as well as Lucas’ shoe release part. Very different videos, but both amazing. ๐
