About 2 years ago I wrote an article titled More than just tricks… and the time has come to follow it up.

That article got a ton of responses of clips that fit the mold of More than just tricks and now I get to highlight some of those. If you read the first article, this is just to refresh your memory; the point here is to look at moments from clips that are memorable, although they might not be a trick.

This time around, I connected with either the skater or filmer to get their perspective on the clip, enjoy.

Gustav Tønnesen

I love watching Gustav footage, and this one kept playing back in my mind over and over after first seeing it. I connected with Fritte Söderström, who films and edits the Jante videos, to get his perspective on this one –

🌀: This SW Powerslide that Gustav does after the SW Feeble looks so cool. Was this something you two had talked about before starting to film the line?

As I remember it, it was completely spontaneous. Nothing we planned at all. I think it just happened unintentionally that try. But, I hardly remember filming that line, to be honest. All of those Jante trips are a blur haha. But yeah, it looks a bit charming for sure.

🌀: That line already has unique tricks in it, but that Powerslide makes it stand out even more. Is it different filming Gustav compared to the average skater, since Gustav films as well?

Hmmm, there’s no big difference really. Sometimes he might have an idea how he wants a certain trick to be filmed, but most of the time he lets me do my thing.

🌀: Well you guys seem to work great together. Thanks for your time!

Mike Anderson

This clip was mentioned by Al Brown, and it’s a sick one. Although this long lens angle was filmed by Tanner Rowe, I reached out to Mack Scharff , who filmed the majority of this video and edited it, to pick his brain –

🌀: Thinking back on when you were editing this video, what made you want to keep this clip of Mike Anderson tossing his hoodie in there?

I just thought it was funny. I remember watching the roll-up, saw he chucked it down, and then he did it on that try. He did a line, jammed over the pipe that was on top of that ledge, dropped off a ledge, and Back 180d off. I don’t know, I just thought it was funny.

🌀: I’m glad you kept it in there! Off-topic of this specific clip, but I know that this video was 4×3 HD, which I’m a fan of, do you prefer that over 16×9?

I like to do that format when it’s project specific, like if we know exactly what we’re filming for, and I have a bit more control over if I’m the only one filming, or if there’s another filmer, that they have the Mark 1 adapter for the HPX. I do prefer filming with that over the Extreme, just because it’s lighter, and the Extreme is worth so much money. MK1’s aren’t cheap either, but shit, 2 or 3 MK1’s is the same price as an Extreme. I just think it’s fun and refreshing. You get way more headroom with that fisheye, it looks cool having that more distorted effect.

Hell yeah

Zered Bassett

Brian Brown reached out and mentioned this push from Switch to Regular that Zered Bassett does in Vicious Cycle, a video that Brian also has an incredible part in. He then linked me up with Zered so I could ask him a few questions, thanks, Brian!

🌀: Was this push from Switch to Regular something that you planned out, or did it just kind of happen?

I remember that I landed that first trick kind of quick, and then I was pushing Switch and that just felt natural. It wasn’t really planned or anything, it just worked out that way.

🌀: Would you rather see someone do a 180 trick to turn around, or do you think it’s cool when someone reverts, or steps around on a push, like you did?

I like how some people turn around, and then I don’t like seeing other people do it. I like both, depending on who’s doing it.

🌀: Would you ever expect something as small as a push to be memorable to people?

A few people have said something about it, but that was a long time ago. I just rewatched it before you called me, and it’s way different watching it now than when I filmed it. It’s pretty funny seeing it now, but I think it just felt right and it kind of just happened.

Daewon Song

@kimdeal360 mentioned this one, and it’s amazing. Colin Kennedy filmed it, and thankfully, I was able to chat with him about it –

🌀: Do you remember what went into the idea of this line? I’m curious what led to this revert that Daewon did…

At the time Daewon and I were always messing around with powerslide variations. Anytime we’d skate a spot that had abnormally smooth ground we’d end up trying various powerslides. We mostly liked the way they felt to do but we also thought some of them looked pretty cool. Daewon has a kickflip manual, powerslide to fakie manual to fakie flip out in his Skate More part that we had already filmed before this line and we really liked how it looked because instead of being a super quick sliding motion, it was a little more controlled and slower. We jokingly named it the Matrix slide as if it were slowed down a bit from real-time.

For this spot, I had found it while searching in East LA and knew it would have potential for Daewon to get a line there (something we didn’t have a lot of for his part). When I brought him there he started figuring out what his ideal manual trick would be and decided on the frontside half cab flip manual frontside 180.

At first we were thinking he’d do a flip trick up onto the stage part from the sidewalk but, then he decided to take advantage of the fact that the ground on the stage section was painted and somewhat slippery and opted for the “Matrix slide” to turn around to fakie for the manual trick. We were going for something fun, and at the time, something relatively unique. An added bonus was that he could do the slide pretty much every time which was helpful because the manual trick ended up being a bit of a headache as you can imagine. So the reason he threw that in that line was pretty much because we were doing unorthodox powerslides at the time and the spot itself was primed for it.

🌀: Wow, what a sick back story, thank you for sharing that! Did you expect the “matrix slide” to be something that stuck out to people?

Yeah, we did. We knew it made us laugh/smile, so we figured other people might feel the same.

🌀: That’s amazing. This article focuses on little things like this that stand out, whether it’s a push, power slide, or anything like that. Is there something like that in a clip that really stands out to you?

I can’t remember the specific video part, but Levi Brown does this seemingly effortless nose-bump shove-it while pushing in a line, and I always loved that.

Also, always loved Mariano’s turn around in his line at LA High in Mouse.

🌀: Both of those are great! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. So hyped on what you shared about filming with Daewon at that time.

My pleasure! I have lots of fond memories from filming with Daewon for Skate More so it’s nice to have to dig them up from my memory every now and again.

Bobby Worrest

This Bobby part is one that I’ve watched countless times since it dropped. I really love the fact that he tells Smalls where he’s headed, as well as the phone call audio starting as soon as he lands the Tre, it’s all so good. I was able to ask Bobby a couple of questions about this –

🌀: First off, how much of this line was planned out?

I think it was the Noseslide 270 and then the Switch Back Lip, anything after that was bonus

🌀: Wow! Obviously the Tre Flip up the 3 wasn’t planned out, but in the back of your mind did you think you’d try to keep it going after the SW Back Lip?

I had been doing the 360 Flips up a lot during that time, and they had been feeling good. I wasn’t always making them though. After the Lipslide I think I had to kickturn, which accidentally set me up to down the ramp.

🌀: Well it all worked out. Are there any other lines that you’ve freestyled and have ended up in one of your parts?

I always kinda throw something random at the end of lines. Sometimes it works out. I did something with a Kickflip down the set by the street and dodged a parked police van. I’m surprised he didn’t jump out and chase me.
