Crew/homie videos are special, it’s something that I tend to gravitate towards because they feel so relatable. They cause my mind to wander and think about random skate sessions I’ve had with friends, tricks we’ve filmed, and trips we’ve been on. They’re natural; it’s friends skating together because they want to, not because they share a sponsor.
My first memory of watching a Gronze video was the Gronze Island – Episode 1 – Gran Canaria edit on Thrasher. This immediately became a video I always watched before going skating. I loved the song choices, the look of the spots, and obviously, the skaters involved. Gronze’s most recent release, TARÉ, reminded me how much I enjoy their videos, which quickly led to me rewatching their 2021 full length, Gronze World. Here’s a couple of TARÉ standouts to start it off –
The man behind it all, Max Geronzi. I always look forward to Max footage, regardless of whether he’s skating his 80’s setup or not. He came through with 2 clips in TARÉ; just enough to get me stoked while leaving me wanting more. One of them was a line ending with this Nollie Front Heel. Just look at his foot flick and wait for the board to hit it, I wish I knew what the level of control felt like. I also love that he rolled away loose like that, in my opinion it added even more flavor to the clip. Also, if you need a good laugh, watch this.
Zander Mitchell has been making some noise over the past couple of years and I’m excited to watch him continue doing his thing. Tech skating can look robotic and a bit bland at times, but it can also flow really well and be stylish, Zander’s is definitely the latter. Speaking of being jealous of someone’s board control, just watch the clip above. The way it shuv’s out is a thing of beauty!
Gronze World kicks off with slams, kick-outs, and anything that you can imagine happening while working on a full-length video, all while Bruno Mars’ Leave the Door Open sets the tone. There’s a long list of skaters featured in this one, which as the title suggests, has footage from all over the world. I’d recommend grabbing a snack and kicking back while tuning into just over 40 minutes of madness.
Hands-down one of my favorite’s; Flo Mirtain. He’s done some damage to this spot before – Switch Laser in the Hélas Fellas video and Switch Front Shuv in his En Passant part. This Switch Big Heel was as good as they come, with that confident stomp into the bank to top it off.
Titi Gormit closes this video out with a banger of a part. It opens up with an absolutely mind-blowing marathon line. Notice how far he gaps out on that Switch Heel over the street gap? Wow. Titi’s part is full of amazing tracksuits, most of which are pieced together via Hélas, as you can see by the pants in the clip above. Spots like this ledge into bank seem to always open up opportunities for creativity, specifically for tricks that may not work as well on a normal flat ledge. This Switch FS Flip 5-0 BS 180 was done perfectly, and flows really well. Thanks for this stand out part, Titi, I’ll rewatching this one for a while!
To wrap things up, one more nod to Max! This Switch Wallie to Back Lip on a dream of a spot is amazing! Look at his posture when he lands, it’s as if this was first try, and didn’t take any effort. I appreciate back-to-back clips at the same spot within a video part and that was definitely done properly with this one.
